I found the entire Amateur Adept series in a used volume store a while back, and since I only read ane-iii as a kid, I was super-pumped to go my hands on some craptacular fantasy/sci-fi (Piers Anthony is the MASTER of this detail subsection of the genre).

Wow. WOW. Somehow I'd forgotten the beastiality overtones in the serial (which he heavily implies and goes so far as to take other characters talking about the potential for it), along with the standard Anthony racism, sexism, and horrifying c

I found the entire Amateur Adept series in a used book store a while back, and since I just read 1-iii as a kid, I was super-pumped to get my easily on some craptacular fantasy/sci-fi (Piers Anthony is the MASTER of this particular subsection of the genre).

Wow. WOW. Somehow I'd forgotten the beastiality overtones in the serial (which he heavily implies and goes so far equally to have other characters talking almost the potential for information technology), forth with the standard Anthony racism, sexism, and horrifying compulsion to make fascist dictator states seem cool.

Most eye-bleaching moment is a tie between the scene in Out of Phaze where one of the shape-changing unicorns goes into heat, in girl-form, and then one of the human male characters has to bang the shit out of her day and night for five days, necessitating him creating a spell to give himself more stamina, and the scene in Robot Good where a smokin' hot vampire chick has to teach a torso-swapped girl (who is normally an amoeba) how to go both #1 and #two. Both of these scenes? More than three pages long.

Then again, I just started the last book, so there could be worse things to come.

Someone should have told Anthony that this series needed to stop. An excellent idea, which ran to its natural determination at the end of the original trilogy. The follow-on books started with some potential, merely the steam has run out of them. Book five, Robot Adept , has reached that tipping point. And the repetition has (started to) fix in.

The underlying theme is the same: Mach has found himself in Phaze, in Bane's body, and Bane, in turn, has plant himself in Proton in Mach'south trunk. Rather than

Someone should have told Anthony that this serial needed to stop. An excellent idea, which ran to its natural conclusion at the stop of the original trilogy. The follow-on books started with some potential, but the steam has run out of them. Book five, Robot Adept , has reached that tipping point. And the repetition has (started to) gear up in.

The underlying theme is the same: Mach has found himself in Phaze, in Bane'south trunk, and Bane, in turn, has found himself in Proton in Mach's body. Rather than the physical transference of the kickoff trilogy, this continues with the psychic link only instead. To upwards the game from the previous novel though, this time, an attempted body-switch while embracing their respective partners means that they tin can now transfer them as well. Cue an almost French-farce type feel to the story as characters rush from one world to the other, having sex with the right partner in the wrong torso, or the wrong partner in the right body, or frequently the right partner in the incorrect body and a non-human form. Yeah at 1 point, Anthony's adolescent preoccupation with sex means that 2 characters with shape-irresolute abilities have to have sex in all 3 of their forms (at to the lowest degree he doesn't accept the side by side step and write actual bestiality).

Again, the game of Proton is a fixed method for every story resolution – this time a game has to occur half in Proton and half in Phaze (for no reason that's every adequately explained). How the two sides are suddenly able to coordinate when we've been told that Mach/Bane are the only contact though is swept under the rug (either Bane or Mach even wonders about how that works at one betoken). And finally, equally if the repetition of themes and devices wasn't enough, each fourth dimension the story switches point-of-view character Anthony feels the need to recap the affiliate that nosotros've only read from the new character's indicate of view. Hang on – all three of united states were at that place in the last chapter. I already know what happened, I just read it!

Somehow, something nearly the serial still hooks me though. This looks like information technology is the fifth volume in the series, so I guess I am looking at it before the forth volume, which isn't a bad thing considering equally shortly every bit the reviews are done and posted it will not really look all that out of place (with the exception of this little introduction). I did enjoy the first three books, merely I actually cannot recall reading these books (though I suspect I did). I really did warm to Stile and Sheen (who was a feminine robot that one could have sex activity with) and wanted to continue their adventures, however by this fourth dimension Anthony had moved in a new direction.

I do not retrieve these novels are meant for young adults because it is clear that by this time (and it is besides very, very clear in Bio of a Space Tyrant) that Piers Anthony is simply obsessed with sex. Okay, granted, he lived through the sexual revolution, but it seems that he had completely missed the bespeak of the revolution. The sexual revolution was all about freeing ourselves of the tyranny of order, and more and so freeing women from the tyranny of wedlock. By taking sex out of wedlock information technology does destroy the institution of marriage to an extent. My argument (and I know many will disagree with me) is that the institution of marriage had already been destroyed. The reason I say that is because it had go a method to enslave women, and in many means it is still used equally such past certain communities today (and it is that attribute of wedlock that repulses me).

Many of the socialist writers have flagged the concept of marriage as beingness a modern class of slavery. Information technology is not that the male is enslaved but rather the female. That began to modify with the women's rights movement in the early on 20th century, then pretty much broke away with the sexual revolution in the 1960s. The question that was asked was 'why do we have to look for marriage to have sex?' The simple answer was 'because the Bible says so.' Does it? I could quite easily argue that it does not (though I tend to prefer the late John Stott's explanation that information technology does). Nonetheless, the response to that was clearly 'I'm non a Christian then why should I listen to the Bible?' This was not a new thing.

Now, I could get on nearly wedlock and sexuality, only I will not and instead turn to Anthony's abuse of the sexual revolution. Information technology is clear from his writings that Anthony holds a very sexist world view. His male characters are so sexually appealing to women that the women autumn over themselves to accept sex activity with them. Information technology almost seems as if his characters are some sort of sex activity-gods. To me it suggests a lot of sexual frustration in Anthony'south life, and perhaps it is some regret that he did non have as much sex with different people equally he would have liked. I take been downward that road, and written stories in a similar vein, still I ever attempt to be a little more realistic about information technology. As for Anthony, I really do question what he is writing here, it is clearly not erotic, but more than science-fiction pornography.

Books 4/five are where the serial really breaks down. Because there is no physical link betwixt the frames of Phaze and Proton anymore, Anthony resorts to a mental connection betwixt the offspring of the main characters of the previous three books. The characters play switcheroo across the frames in a Freaky-Friday-esque maneuver, encountering and developing love interests in the opposite frame. Pretty standard cookie-cutter plot with only a few small twists and turns to keep things interesting.

Because there is no physical link betwixt the frames of Phaze and Proton anymore, Anthony resorts to a mental connectedness between the offspring of the main characters of the previous three books. The characters play switcheroo across the frames in a Freaky-Fri-esque maneuver, encountering and developing dear interests in the opposite frame. Pretty standard cookie-cutter plot with simply a few small twists and turns to keep things interesting.

The biggest drawback that I could see is that the story is told from the viewpoint of each of the 4 primary characters in plow, but has entirely likewise much repetition and review to keep my involvement. And then but for good measure, 1 of the characters has a Game in the Proton phase where in the competition of storytelling, she rehashes the entire plot of the story All the same Once more. By this signal in the novel I was but breezing through, waiting to finish the story.

I think this is as far equally I've always gotten in this series - I got my hands on copies of the concluding few books, just if they're every bit droll as this 1, information technology's going to be my recommendation for new readers to stop after the previous, 3rd book in the series.

This book starts where the cliffhanger of the terminal book left off, to save their love Mach and Fleta take fled to the bad guys (The adverse adepts.) If Bane wins both he and Mach will be complimentary of the bad guys--merely they will lose their romances. If Mach wins and then Blight volition join him in the enemy camp and will help the bad guys to overthrown Blue which could mean destruction of their planet--but they get to keep their ladies.

I stupidly bought several books in this series all at once because until now Piers Anthony has been a reliable author. Here he has plain decided to bilk his readers for money. This book does not tell a complete story to force the reader into buying the next book in the serial. Fortunately the story this book tells is so terrible I am not tempted.

The story is that the expert guys and bad guys take come to an impasse then who controls the side by side gear up of changes the mirror worlds of Phaze and Proton will be determined by A GAME OF PING PONG!!!!! Stupid beyond belief.

There are other failings, like why the good guys would agree to the contest since there is no reason to believe the bad guys will continue their word if they lose, merely practice you actually need more? In fact this book is and then bad that it shades my opinion of other Piers Anthony books I used to like. Now I'1000 thinking I was just young and naive when I read those and re-reading them will likely be a very disappointing feel.

Perchance I should take into business relationship when this was written, but I don't experience that generous. Everything by Anthony seems to have the same bones anti-female bias(oh, I centre women, but they are inherently inferior). This book is no exception.
I first read this series years ago, and followed information technology closely enough and then. This time I jumped into to number five in the series without bothering to go dorsum and re-read the beginning four. I found that I didn't care enough this time to go along the characters straight, westward Maybe I should take into account when this was written, but I don't feel that generous. Everything by Anthony seems to have the same bones anti-female bias(oh, I center women, merely they are inherently inferior). This book is no exception.

I plant that I didn't care enough this time to go on the characters directly, when they switched worlds, when they pretended to switch worlds; it didn't actually matter. I don't know why I keep reading the books in this series. The writing is execrable, the plotting moth-eaten, the preoccupation with teen-age sex deplorable. I did enjoy Blueish Adept when I first read it years ago, so maybe it'south nostalgia. But at that place is something that however grabs me...."The Game", an elaborate anything-goes tourney, is still fun. And who can resist shape-irresolute unicorns, trolls, emotional robots and dastardly adepts, oh my. Not a bad read for a hot summertime's twenty-four hour period with a cool ice tea I don't know why I keep reading the books in this series. The writing is execrable, the plotting moth-eaten, the preoccupation with teen-age sex lamentable. I did enjoy Blue Skilful when I first read information technology years ago, and so maybe it's nostalgia. Mach, a self-enlightened humanoid robot of Proton and Bane, son of the Blue Adept of Phaze, have managed to cantankerous the bulwark between the scientific world of Proton and the magical world of Phaze. They are doing this by inhabiting each other's bodies. They are the only 2 able to practice and so, and considering of this two different factions vie to control them and apply their power. They have likewise fallen in honey with females, Fleta the Unicorn of Phaze (with Mach) and Afraid, the amoeba from the planet Moeba (with Mach, a self-enlightened humanoid robot of Proton and Bane, son of the Bluish Adept of Phaze, take managed to cantankerous the barrier between the scientific world of Proton and the magical globe of Phaze. They are doing this past inhabiting each other's bodies. They are the only two able to do then, and because of this two different factions vie to control them and apply their power. They have also fallen in dear with females, Fleta the Unicorn of Phaze (with Mach) and Agape, the amoeba from the planet Moeba (with Bane) and are both also in danger of beingness used to force the two to cooperate.
Much of this volume concerns the same events told from the perspectives of all four of the players. The abiding back-and-along, in addition to the confusion of trying to call back which consciousness inhabits which body in which earth, makes for a somewhat confusing, but also very repetitive read. It seemed to me, as well, there were several plot holes; ways in which the central conflict could have been resolved without farther ado. However, ado is what makes a book, and and then it goes on. I felt that at that place was birthday much more than sex than was necessary, also. (Vague Spoiler Alert!) I was also quite disappointed with the ending, and am humble about what will ensue in the side by side volume. I'm sure everything will turn out to be fine, but the ending is non terribly optimistic. ...more

As I read these books I have to wonder, did Anthony ever lose track of his characters? In this chapter of the Apprentice Adept serial, Mach and Bane have discovered that their switching places is endangering both the frames of Phaze and Proton. At present the ii must decide between their love or the survival of the frames. And... SPOILER Alarm!!! Nosotros become an surprise plot twist in the form of Afraid and Fleta... exchanging bodies across the frames. Now there are four characters crossing the mantle and a As I read these books I accept to wonder, did Anthony e'er lose rails of his characters? In this chapter of the Apprentice Expert series, Mach and Bane have discovered that their switching places is endangering both the frames of Phaze and Proton. Now the two must decide between their beloved or the survival of the frames. And... SPOILER Warning!!! We go an surprise plot twist in the form of Agape and Fleta... exchanging bodies beyond the frames. Now at that place are 4 characters crossing the curtain and all have very important roles to play. This is where, I would (as the author) have trouble keeping track of which character was where. I would be re-reading every page to brand sure I was writing the right person's story. This but shows what wonderful skill Anthony has as a author. Oh and... he brought the Game back into play. Fleta enters the game every bit Agape in a magnificent ploy to assistance the Conflicting get to condom, out of reach of the Contrary Citizens. And the story spins on, while the excitement builds. I was, mentally, on the edge of my seat for almost of this book. I merely could not put it down! This book, in my opinion, didn't really have an ending. Moreso than their partners, certainly. Information technology continues to bank on the stranger-in-paradise concept by this time having the love interests switch - which gives the states rather more access to their characters, and they do develop into relatively sympathetic people. Moreso than their partners, certainly. There's only i attempted rape, and it'south foiled in a rather satisfying fashion (raping an amoeba Does Not Work when she tin easily reform her abdomen into a fully functional vise.) The book ends with however another plot-determining set of contests - this mechanism is a little creaky at this signal, merely it's entertaining enough to read. (Although... some other table lawn tennis lucifer? They could use all the games in the universe, but y'all had to use this one again? Weren't upward for whatever reseach, were you, buddy?)

Definitely the point at which the serial begins to refuse, only non all that objectionable in itself.

This book is book #5 of the whole series and second in this section of it and information technology sucks. In this book you take to read the same scene from 2 unlike people each fourth dimension. It'due south non even a short little thing, we have to reread the same scene just from the other persons POV. Also I didn't need to read about Agape learning to employ the restroom! And as other reviews have said Oh the sex activity, every fourth dimension y'all turned aro

Can I burn my eyes out, please? No? Well so yous force me to explicate why they need burned out.

This book is book #five of the whole series and 2nd in this section of information technology and it sucks. In this volume y'all take to read the same scene from 2 different people each fourth dimension. It's not fifty-fifty a short niggling thing, nosotros accept to reread the same scene just from the other persons POV. Also I didn't need to read about Agape learning to utilize the restroom! And equally other reviews accept said Oh the sex, every fourth dimension you turned around some was having sex or faking having sexual activity! I would have loved more story line, merely no we need to read almost using the bathroom and having sexual activity!

I strongly encourage this be read equally the entire serial. The concluding books get in a very dissimilar direction than the showtime few.

At kickoff, this seems a rather typical fantasy type volume. Toward the end, well, the comparing to our own globe is inevitable and powerful.

Why can't we all but go along?

I'k giving the series a rating of 4. Some of the books in the series are better than others. As a whole, I think information technology's worthy of a 4.

A dandy fantasy series. A very enjoyable read. I could not await for the side by side one to come up in from the library.
